Skyla admired her beautiful children at breakfast on Oliver’s first day of school. He and Aubrey could have been twins. If his hair were longer, she wouldn’t be able to tell who was who in pictures. Genetics were just the beginning of their similarities. They were both Jonathan’s heirs. He would never admit it but treated them that way without realizing it. Aubrey carried on the new legacy with the restaurants while Oliver would live on and perpetuate the Pruett name. Oliver loved both his sisters, but he and Aubrey had a special bond. Jonathan thought it grew from the time they spent together when she cared for him after her birthday, but Skyla knew that time together only enhanced what they already had.
Oliver was such a stylish little guy, and Skyla couldn’t get over how cute he was. What they said about mothers and sons was true, and she was glad to experience that joy. He was never part of their plan–especially not in the middle of their lives–but, he came at a good time. She had seen one child into adulthood and prepared to see off another. Her nerves weren’t as bad, and life had settled into a nice routine. She was more prepared emotionally to handle the adventure that came with raising a son.
“I’m going to the restaurant now,” Aubrey said, placing her dishes in the washer. “I’ll see you guys later. Enjoy your first day, Oliver!”
She squeezed his shoulders and kissed his chubby little cheeks before leaving. The scene made Skyla’s heart jump. As she watched him rake French toast into his mouth, she wondered if Jonathan would expect her back at work. Staying at home to raise him was a privilege she enjoyed thoroughly. But, he still needed looking after, right? The thought of him arriving home from school to an empty house turned her stomach. She loved working at Viviana’s but wasn’t ready to return. It had been so long since she worked. Would she even know what to do? Would things be weird? Did Jonathan even need her anymore? He always had the chops and managed well without her and Aubrey. Stepping away was a good lesson for him as well, but they could discuss it later.
“So, Oli, are you excited?” Maya asked.
Oh, Maya. The charming, daring one. Her teenage years were quite the adventure, and they definitely earned their parenting stripes. Her life had finally taken off, and she did well; Skyla was so proud. But, she desired more for the fetching young woman. The world advanced around her while she remained the same. Skyla would never wish away her children, but moving out would be good for Maya. Taking care of herself and a dwelling would force her to see past her own comfort and grow. Skyla feared what would happen if she got married and had children in her current state.
“Yeah! I hope Carlee and Zander are there. Mommy, can I sign up for scouts?”
“Of course, handsome. You sign up for whatever you want.”
Good thing Jonathan wasn’t there; he’d tease her for all eternity. Skyla had always been a lax parent and rarely declined her children’s requests. But, Oliver was her sweet baby boy. Saying no to him was like saying no to Girl Scout Cookies. Impossible. He was a spoiled little goober, but he was her special spoiled little goober, and he could have whatever he wanted.
All Pruett kids have been so well-behaved. I wonder if Oliver is going to stir the things up a bit as he grows up. I would love to see a spoiled Pruett brat for a change. Sometimes the kids don’t turn out well no matter how good parenting was applied.
True. I suppose we’ll see what happens with him…and all of them.
I’ve always loved Oliver even if he’s a spoiled little goober. LOL
“Saying no to him was like saying no to Girl Scout Cookies.” I love that line! Because, right?
I hope his first day at school is a good one.
He’s got everyone wrapped for sure lol
That he does! LOL
Super cute!
Gotta love this kid
