The morning after Maya’s birthday, she and her mother were alone in the house having breakfast. She was so happy to be finished with school. She didn’t have any immediate plans for her life, so for the moment her plans were to chill and enjoy her newfound freedom.
Skyla had been admiring her. She thought she was even more beautiful than she was before and hoped that there was a bright future awaiting her. Thoughts of their conversations about her behavior made her nervous. Now that she was a young adult, would she act more responsibly? Or, would she be even worse? Maya constantly talked about going to clubs and throwing parties. The Pruetts weren’t strangers to a good time, and Skyla didn’t mind her interest. However, she hoped the party lifestyle would not overcome her. Midway through her thoughts, she chuckled at something she had just remembered.
“What’s so funny?” Maya asked.
“You know you’re technically still grounded, right?”
Watching her daughter laugh, Skyla thought about motherhood. It never stops. We don’t stop worrying about them simply because they can take care of themselves. We just worry about different things!
There was a song Maya liked playing on the radio, and she got up to bust a few moves. As she was getting up, she looked on at her mother. She thought about the horrible things she said to her the last time she got in trouble and was glad Skyla knew she didn’t mean it because she didn’t. She loved her mother and knew whatever she did was for her own good. Somehow she felt like she would never stop looking out for her, and she appreciated it.
Skyla saw Maya dancing in her peripheral vision and smiled. Maya didn’t seem to be like either one of her parents in any way, but every now and then Skyla could see parts of herself in her. Watching her dance made Skyla proud that some of her more fun qualities were passed onto Maya. Well…if she does turn out to be a party girl, at least she’ll look good doing it!
